Kindur.is is a web store which sells sheep, one of a kind in the world. Kindur.is allows you to become the owner of a sheep on an Icelandic farm. There are two possibilities: fostering a sheep or owning a sheep.
Fostering a sheep
You are invited to choose a sheep from the website and, when possible, to name it. You will receive a Christmas card from your sheep with a picture of it and the highlights of its year. You will gain an access to the farm where the sheep lives, and you can come and visit 5-6 times over the year, depending on what’s on in the country. For additional fee you will able to get the wool from the sheep for your own use after it has been sheared. The wool is sent to Ullarselid wool processing centre which will process it according your wishes. You can thus boast gloves, mittens, hat or a woollen jumper made from the wool of your own sheep.
Owning a sheep
You are invited to choose a sheep from the website and name it. You will receive a Christmas card from your sheep with a picture of it and the highlights of its year. During the Open Days, or via the internet, you can choose from the farm the ram which you would like to mate with you sheep. You will then have the meat products* delivered to your home after you have chosen how you would like to have them processed. For additional fee you will able to get the wool from the sheep for your own use. The wool is sent to Ullarselid wool processing centre which will process it according your wishes. Also for an additional fee, you, as an owner, can have your sheep inseminated by choosing a ram from a catalogue of all the best breeding rams in Iceland. Moreover, for extra fee, the owner has the choice of having the meat products smoked (smoked lamb or hangikjöt is a traditional Icelandic delicacy), and having the pelt tanned at Atlantic Leather.
*Eigið fé ehf. sells permits to breed sheep which are like fishing permits; there is no 100% guarantee that the fisherman will fish. If everything works out you will have the opportunity to produce your own meat and the quality control reaches therefore all the way home to the kitchen.
