The Idea behind kindur.is

It is not that long ago since we, Icelanders, were a nation of farmers, and there is still a so-called “hobby farmer” hiding in many places. The launch of www.kindur.is makes it possible for all secret sheep farmers to grow their own meat through a website, and then get it processed and delivered to the door in autumn.

The ‘Open Days’ were created because of the rapid changes that have taken place since we were a nation of farmers and because of how limited access the public has to the countryside nowadays. By owning a sheep on a farm people will get closer to their roots/strengthen their connection to the land and be able to produce their own meat.

We hope that by facilitating access to the countryside people’s understanding of the importance of keeping rural areas populated will increase. Not to mention what a beautiful animal the Icelandic sheep is, and how enjoyable it is to have your own sheep.
